At the Table

Dinners, weddings, ingredients, kitchens and the places they happen.

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Two Decades on One Coast.

Long tables under a beach tent in Santa Teresa. Crudo cut from fish landed at Mal País that morning. A villa kitchen at six in the evening with four courses still to go. Market stalls in Oaxaca.

Most of what is here came from real work on the Nicoya Peninsula: destination wedding catering, private chef dinners in villas, hands-on cooking classes and culinary travel in Mexico.

What You Are Looking At

Real Events, Real Kitchens.

Every setting in this gallery is somewhere we have actually cooked.

The wedding and event photographs come from properties in Santa Teresa and Mal País — beach tents, open-air terraces, private estates and the long tables that end up being the center of the night. Catering on this coast means working with the site you are given, so the pictures show the reality of that as much as the plates.

The villa images are private chef work: dinners plated in a rental kitchen in Santa Teresa, breakfast for a family halfway through a two-week stay, a grill lit at the edge of a garden.

The food photographs follow the ingredients. Ceviche and crudo cut from fish landed at Mal País, produce from farms on the Nicoya Peninsula, and the handful of dishes that have stayed on menus since Soma Restaurant opened in Santa Teresa.

The market and street-food frames are from the culinary journeys through Mexico City and Oaxaca. Different country, same idea: start with the people who grow, catch and cook it.
